Getting Started – Administrator Notes

This document contains critical information to ensure a working version of Qasper.

Whether you are self-hosting or using an Internet Service Provider, one person in your company needs to be the administrator

The administrator has a few on-going responsibilities, including:

1. Running Qasper for the first time. (SECTION 2)
2. Setting up users. (SECTION 3)
3. Backing up (and, if necessary, restoring) the database using the built-in database management facilities. (SECTION 4)

These are critically important responsibilities. If you need help, either getting started or on an on-going basis, visit the technical support page at http://www.qasper.com/qasper_support.htm.

Whoever is assigned as administrator must follow the instructions in this document, particular the sections on modifying various settings (administrator password, EMailPath)

SECTION 2 - RUNNING QASPER FOR THE FIRST TIME – IMPORTANT INFORMATION

This information applies to all installations, whether self-installed on your own computers or your own ISP host, or installed by the Qasper technical support team.

An administrator must be appointed in your workgroup to handle some basic tasks.

1. Point your Internet Explorer browser to your web site and the web page “start.aspx”, something like this:

http://www.mydomainname.com/start.aspx

2. Log in as administrator using the user name administrator and password administrator. These are the default settings shipped with Qasper.

You cannot change the user name, but be certain to change the password at the first opportunity, as set out next.

3. IMPORTANT: After you log in to Qasper, we urge you to change your administrator password as soon as possible to prevent others from accessing Qasper. To do that:

a. Log in to Qasper online as administrator.

b. Click the Admin button and click it again to enter the Administration module.

c. Select the administrator from the Select the user list.

d. Click [Get the user]

e. The administrator profile will display and will have these settings:

User name: administrator

Password: administrator

f. Change the password. We recommend a password of medium complexity, not one easily figured out by others. For example, a combination of upper and lower-case characters and some numbers, like this:

 PN87eTcb3

However, do not forget your password.

g. Change any other information you wish to (First name, etc.)

h. Click [Save changes] to save the new information.

i. WRITE DOWN THE PASSWORD AND MEMORIZE IT. We repeat: WRITE DOWN THE PASSWORD AND MEMORIZE IT.

j. Log out and log in again to test the new password. If the log in fails, open the database, locate the Users table, open the table and return all rows. Locate the administrator row, get the password and WRITE DOWN THE PASSWORD AND MEMORIZE IT.

4. After logging in, go to the Administration module and click the [Settings] tab.

5. Click the dropdown list Select the property and locate the value EMailPath. Set the value to the appropriate value. Typically, for in-house installations, the value is:

 localhost

For GoDaddy.com installation, it’s typically:

relay-hosting.secureserver.net

(Confirm the value by contacting technical support at your host)

6. Click the dropdown list Select the property and locate the value HostEMailName. Set the value to the appropriate value you want to use.

SECTION 3 – Set up users.

Click the [User profiles] tab and set up the users for your workgroup. This is a simple task:

a. Click [New user].

b. Enter First name, Last name and choose a security level.

c. Give the user a username (leave it in all lowercase). We suggest that, to start, the user name and password should be the same, a combination of first and last name, like this for Marion Johnstone:

            marionj

d. Enter a charge rate, if applicable.

e. Click [Save changes].

f. Notify the user of their user name and password and tell them how to change the user name and password (it’s the same method you used to change your administrator password).

SECTION 4 – Database management.

Qasper provides its own database management facilities for use in cases where you either don't have a database administration software package or your host provider does not provide sufficient facilities for database management.

The database management functions are part of the Administration section. Click here.

SECTION 5 – Setting up email users.

You may need to set up email users if they are going to use Qasper's email system.

If you are running Qasper on WebHost4Life, you will have to set up email users.

To do that, click here.
